Accessibility and usability barriers
The following information is provided to help people with disabilities know what potential barriers may exist within the UW Guide iOS mobile app. The Center for User Experience tested the following guides in 2024: Parent and Family Events, Wisconsin Welcome.
Screen reader accessibility barriers may cause difficulty for people who are blind or have low vision
Some interactive elements in the app are not accessible to screen reader users, such as a few form controls and buttons with missing or unclear labels, toggle switches in the app's Settings that are not announced and cannot be selected, and event category filters in the Schedule view that cannot be selected.
Dialogs that open within the app are not announced to the user, and there are a couple instances where button state and status changes are not announced. Guide cover images and the color-coded dots that represent event categories are not announced. Some images that appear during the account sign-up process and in the app's Settings are announced but do not have appropriate alt text.
The list of events in the Schedule view is difficult to navigate due to an illogical reading order (the "Add event" button is announced before each event name and details). Additionally, there is no easy way to jump to events at a certain time of day.
Color contrast accessibility barriers may cause difficulty for people with visual disabilities
Some text labels, button states, and graphic elements may be too low contrast for people with low vision or color blindness to read or distinguish. In the side navigation menu for any guide, the cover image is used as a background behind the gray text of the guide's name, which could make it difficult to read the guide name depending on the cover image.
Depending on the guide and the number of event category filters in the Schedule view, the color-coded dots that represent event categories could be difficult to distinguish from one another.
